The Diablo 4 community has been buzzing since the release of the Spiritborn class in the Vessel of Hatred DLC. With its overwhelming popularity and game-breaking power, Spiritborn has quickly become the go-to class for players in Season 6, leading to a surge of excitement–and, in some cases, frustration–in the Diablo 4 ecosystem.
In a recent Campfire Chat Live Broadcast held on November 12, the game's developers shed light on the future of Spiritborn and what's in store for the upcoming mid-term patch and Season 7. While Spiritborn continues to dominate the meta, its overwhelming strength has raised questions about game balance and fairness for players choosing other classes.
Spiritborn's Current State
Since its introduction in the Vessel of Hatred DLC, Spiritborn has taken the spotlight for its unparalleled combat effectiveness. With the ability to deal massive damage and dispatch enemies at lightning speed, it has become the first choice for many players looking to experience the DLC content. Currently, nearly 60% of players are using Spiritborn, while other classes like Sorcerer have seen a noticeable drop in popularity, with only 30% of players selecting them in Season 6.
This dominance has sparked concerns about game balance. While it's clear that Spiritborn offers a thrilling combat experience, its raw power has overshadowed other classes, leading to a growing demand for adjustments. Spiritborn's powerful skill synergy, though unintentional, has led to it being far more potent than the developers originally intended. In response, the developers have already addressed some bugs that caused Spiritborn to deal excessive damage, such as the issue where charged feathers reduced the frame rate for other players, but Spiritborn's overall strength remains a topic of discussion.
The Mid-Term Patch
Despite calls from the community to nerf Spiritborn, the developers have confirmed that there will be no nerf to Spiritborn in the mid-term patch. Instead, the focus will be on enhancing other classes to ensure that they are competitive with Spiritborn. The patch will buff the damage output of less-popular classes, thereby raising their effectiveness and making the gameplay experience more balanced across the board.
Spiritborn will also see slight buffs to help refine its versatility. The patch is not intended to weaken Spiritborn but to open up new possibilities for build diversity, allowing players to experiment with different ways of playing the class.
The Season 7 and Spiritborn's Future
Looking ahead to Season 7, the developers are preparing for more significant changes to Spiritborn. While the mid-term patch focuses on enhancing other classes, Season 7 will be the time for fixing the class's unexpected interactions that have made it so dominant. Adam Jackson, the class designer for Diablo 4, mentioned that Season 7 will aim to bring Spiritborn more in line with other classes, ensuring a fairer balance while retaining its power.
Though specific details on how Spiritborn will be adjusted in Season 7 are still under wraps, the devs have promised that players will get an opportunity to test these changes on a PTR (Public Test Realm) starting after Thanksgiving. This will allow players to preview the adjustments and provide feedback before the changes hit the main servers in mid-January, alongside the launch of Season 7.
What to Expect
If you're currently enjoying Spiritborn's power, now's the time to make the most of it. While the upcoming nerfs may not drastically diminish its strength, it's clear that changes are on the horizon. Whether these adjustments will lead to significant controversy or bring much-needed balance to the game remains to be seen, but one thing is for sure – the Spiritborn era won't last forever.
As Season 7 approaches, be prepared for a slightly nerfed Spiritborn, but also expect other classes to become much more competitive. For now, enjoy the powerful Spiritborn and the excitement it brings to the Diablo 4 world, and get ready to test out the upcoming changes in the PTR before the new season begins.
Stay tuned for more details, and make sure you're ready to face whatever comes next in the world of Diablo 4.
