In Diablo II, players often need to adjust their character's attributes and skill points at different stages of the game. This process is known as "resetting" or "respeccing" in the gaming community. In older versions of Diablo II, such as 1.09 and 1.11, players had to start a new character if they made a mistake with their point allocation or wanted to optimize their build later on. However, since version 1.13, the game has provided built-in methods for resetting character points.
There are two main ways to reset your character in Diablo II: Resurrected:
1. Quest-based Resetting: To reset via quest, you need to complete the first quest in Act 1, called "The Cavern." This quest is straightforward; you just need to kill all the monsters inside a cave located in the Blood Moor map outside of Rogue Encampment. After completing this quest, speak to Alkor in town, and you will see an option to reset your attributes and skills. Note that this option can only be used once per difficulty level, meaning you have three chances in total (Normal, Nightmare, Hell).
2. Item-based Resetting: Apart from the three free quest-based resets, there's also an unlimited item-based resetting method using a unique item called the "Token of Absolution." Unlike the quest-based method, this item cannot be dropped by monsters directly. Instead, it requires four different types of Essences, which are dropped by bosses in Hell difficulty levels. Two of these Essences (blue) are obtained from bosses named Andariel and Duriel, while the other two (yellow, red, and green) come from Diablo, Baal, and Mephisto respectively.
To craft the Token of Absolution, place these four Essences into a Horadric Cube and click on them to combine. It's worth noting that these Essences are not guaranteed drops, so obtaining the Token can be somewhat randomized. Additionally, if you're struggling with these bosses early on, crafting the Token becomes even more challenging.
Players should make good use of their three free resetting opportunities in Diablo II: Resurrected. Making minor mistakes with attribute allocation or skill choices early on usually doesn't significantly impact your overall gameplay experience. Unless there's a significant change in playstyle or equipment synergy, it's generally advisable not to exhaust these free resets too soon.
